XIA QINGSHAN, the former head of a law enforcement team and a member of the Party committee of Huaqiangbei Subdistrict Office in Futian District, confessed to taking 595,000 yuan (US$97,282) in bribes after hearing about a fake anonymous tip-off about him.
The case was heard by Yantian District People’s Court on Wednesday.
The fake tip-off accused Xia of allowing the operation of an illegal wet market on Yannan Road. It claimed Xia shared common interests with the market owner. Futian District’s discipline inspection commission took the case and found Xia innocent.
“After the investigation, they asked me if I had anything else to say,” said Xia. “The next morning, I confessed to two crimes.”
During Wednesday’s court hearing, prosecutors confirmed Xia’s confession and considered his act voluntary surrender.
From February 2012 to July 2014, Xia took a monthly bribe, which Xia claimed added up to 535,000 yuan, from a store owner surnamed Chen.
In April 2014, Xia took another bribe, a sum of 60,000 yuan, from a man surnamed Zhang, the vice general manager of Huaqiang Electronics World, in exchange for Xia’s help with illegal construction work to expand the company’s stores. (Zhang Xiaoyi)
