    Cyanide detected

    Cyanide* has been detected in water samples collected near the blast site in Binhai New Area in Tianjin, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said on Monday.

    Two massive explosions, which occurred in the port city just before midnight on August 12, killed 114 people and devastated* a large area.

    Environmental authorities set up 27 additional water monitoring sites, three of which reported excessive levels of cyanide, with some samples containing 27.4 times the normal limit. Two of the original monitoring stations reported cyanide levels of 1.25 to 2.2 times the standard.

    

    Girl arrested for swindle

    Police have arrested a microblogger claiming to be a girl whose father was missing after last week’s huge explosion in Tianjin who abruptly deleted the account after Web users donated more than 100,000 yuan (US$15,650).

    The blogger posted on Weibo.com on August 13, saying she had lost touch with her father who worked next to the industrial area.

    

    Half-day vacation encouraged

    China is encouraging all employers to give staff Friday afternoons off with pay during the summer months in a bid to* boost tourism.

    A State Council circular said on August 11 that such a move would allow people to take a vacation using Friday afternoon plus the weekend.

    It also asked employers to guarantee paid holidays and encouraged companies to stagger* annual leave.

    

    Woman killed in knife attack

    A man killed a Chinese woman and injured a Frenchman with a knife around noon on August 13 in the Sanlitun area in the capital city for no apparent reason.

    Police received a report of the attack around 11:49 a.m. and subdued a 25-year-old suspect surnamed Gao at the south end of the famous pub street in the Sanlitun area.

    The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital but the woman from Shandong Province died despite medical rescue attempts.
