    Mah-jongg spine injury

    A WOMAN in Kengzi, Pingshan New Area, had to have surgery to treat a spinal cord compression caused by playing mah-jongg all night.

    Serious cases of spinal cord compression can cause paralysis.

    The woman had surgery at Pingshan Pingle Orthopedics Hospital and is recovering.

    Hammer murder

    A MAN in his 40s killed one and injured another in a hammer attack in a factory canteen in Buji Subdistrict, Longgang District, on Saturday.

    The man surnamed Wang, 40, a Chongqing native, attacked his colleagues, identified as 39-year-old Li and Wang, 38, after an argument. Wang died at the scene and Li suffered serious brain damaged and is in critical condition.

    Phone seller arrest

    A STALL owner in a Huaqiangbei electronic products market was detained by Futian police for allegedly selling reconditioned Samsung phones that he claimed were new.

    The stall owner, surnamed Shi, said he brought the phones from Hong Kong and guaranteed their quality. The prices of the phones were much lower than new phones.

    A police investigation found that Shi rented an apartment in Futian District and purchased used mobile phones for reconditioning between December 2014 and April this year.

    Paper, rice and dragons

    A SPECIAL form of paper cutting, the Pinghu paper dragon dance, and cooking square-shaped rice cakes in Shenzhen were listed as intangible cultural heritage items by the Guangdong cultural authority recently.

    Thirty-one cultural heritage items from the city have been listed by provincial level heritages in Guangdong.

    Hard to swallow

    A MAN tried to make himself ineligible for prison by swallowing eye glasses, tin foil and jade pendants before he was taken into custody for allegedly selling drugs, according to police with the Nanhu Police Station in Luohu District.

    While conducting the routine X-ray before criminal detention, police found the objects in the suspect, surnamed Deng. He later confessed that he swallowed the items, hoping the authorities would find him medically unfit for detention and release him on bail if he were caught.

    Police housed him under surveillance for six days, and Deng took the opportunity to swallow a nail clipper. The objects were removed from Deng in two surgeries performed at Luohu People’s Hospital.

    Wasted youth

    A 17-YEAR-OLD girl was recently caught by Longgang police using drugs in a hotel with a teenage friend.

    The girl, identified as Ah Li, said her parents are migrant workers and seldom visit her. Ah Li dropped out of school and worked at a factory. She soon quit the job and was asked by a friend to work in a nightclub.

    Ah Li told police that she took drugs just to “drop a few pounds.” Police are searching for the man who gave Ah Li drugs.

    Smash and grab

    A SUSPECT was caught by police in Guangming New Area on Saturday night at an Internet bar after he was caught on a surveillance camera fleeing from the scene of a crime.

    On the night of Aug. 8, the suspect, surnamed Zhou, allegedly smashed the windows of a car parked near a residential building and stole two cartons of cigarettes and two bottles of wine, with another suspect surnamed Tao.

    The stolen goods were estimated to be worth about 4,000 yuan (US$627.60).
