    Troops cut by 300,000

    China will cut the number of its troops by 300,000 and will never seek hegemony* but protect the peace of the country and the world, President Xi Jinping said on September 3 in his speech before the V-Day military parade* as part of China’s commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

    China will complete the cut by the end of 2017, Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun announced hours after Xi made the remarks. Yang said the move will target troops equipped with outdated armaments*, administrative staff and noncombat* personnel.

    

    WWII veterans honored

    President Xi Jinping on September 2 gave medals to 30 Chinese and foreign veterans* and civilians who fought for China in World War II ahead of the country’s high-profile V-Day celebrations, which started at 10 a.m. in Beijing on September 3.

    Xi said all national heroes, including those from World War II, are the “backbone*” of the Chinese nation and their deeds and spirit are a great driving force for the country.

    

    Monument to be built

    A monument* will be built on the site of the deadly Tianjin blasts in memory of those who lost their lives in the accident last month, Binhai New Area authorities announced on September 5.

    Tianjin plans to build a 24-hectare park on the site of the blast and the monument will be given pride of place, according to Binhai New Area Planning and Land Resources Administration.

    

    ‘Flying Tigers’ members attend peace festival

    The Fifth China Zhijiang International Peace and Culture Festival began on Saturday in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County in Hunan Province, Central China.

    As this year coincides with the 70th anniversary of the World War II victory, the widow of U.S. General Claire Lee Chennault, the leader of the “Flying Tigers” air squadron, Anna Chan Chennault, and former members of Flying Tigers attended the festival.(SD-Agencies)
