A WAVE of refugees has been crashing into the frontiers of the member states of the European Union in recent weeks, fleeing wars and violence in Iraq and Syria. Earlier reports said half a million people might have arrived in Europe this year. Defying Hungary’s new border fence and EU asylum rules, tens of thousands are making their way to Germany and Sweden. Police in Hungary, Austria and Denmark closed major highways as groups of migrants, hundreds strong, marched north. Many of the Syrians, Iraqis and Eritreans whom the European Union says are most deserving and will form the bulk of those offered accommodation are trying to reach the wealthier EU states of Germany and Sweden.
