The visiting president encouraged more investment and reiterated* support for U.S. businesses operating in China.

    $2b pledged for poor states

President Xi Jinping on Saturday pledged* US$2 billion for a new development fund for poor countries on a U.N. visit.

Xi, in his first address to the United Nations, said that China would launch an assistance fund for developing countries with an initial investment of US$2 billion and step up investment in the least developed countries — which are mostly in Africa — by at least US$12 billion by 2030.

    3 prosecuted for killing panda

Three people have been prosecuted* for killing a giant panda and trading its meat in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, prosecutors said on September 24.

Wang Wenlin and Wang Wencai, brothers from Zhaotong City in Yunnan, allegedly killed a giant panda in late 2014. The third suspect, Li Kequan, participated in trading its meat and paws.

Warehouse owner to pay for blast losses

Those affected by two blasts in China’s Tianjin City will be compensated* by the owner of the warehouse* where the August 12 blasts took place, authorities said.

More than 120 injured people, including five who are still in critical condition*, remain in the hospital while 673 others have been discharged, Xinhua news agency said on Sunday. At least 165 people died while another eight still remained missing.

The compensation process has begun for 11,000 damaged houses and 414 affected companies.
