Traditional structures in modern society
    2015-09-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Ever since the technological revolution, humankind has stepped into a brand-new world. With the accelerated development of advanced technology and modern structures, we have witnessed a prosperous period of time, during which our structures have become largely diversified. For the past few decades, skyscrapers have occupied major cities all around China. However, it is also noticeable that such tremendous change has resulted in a loss, or sacrifice, of traditional buildings. Hence, the conflicts between traditional buildings and modern structures are becoming sharper. But one thing is sure — preserving traditional structures is of great importance.

Two years ago, I did a project on preserving Lingnan traditional structures in South China. After some research, I found out that the number of traditional buildings in Lingnan is decreasing at an unbelievable rate. It was kind of a shock to me when I learned that a historic and imposing structure was turned into a large restaurant for commercial use.

As I dug deeper, I gradually realized how much traditional buildings mean to us. Being both masterpieces of our ancestors and priceless treasures, they are much more than just buildings. What these traditional structures represent are wisdom, inspiration and creativity from the past. Since they play a significant role in their cultures, what the past generations have left is meant to inspire their descendants and give them the opportunity to keep their unique elements alive. As a matter of fact, once they are torn down, their cultures will slowly drift away.

There is no denying that over the last few years we have obtained numerous benefits from the rapidly growing modern structures. Take Shenzhen as an example, from the International Trade Center Building, Diwang Mansion and KK 100 to the newly constructed Ping An Building, people all over the world are impressed by “Shenzhen speed.” Not only have they contributed a lot to people’s welfare, they also have brought a vigorous and promising future to the city. Fortunately, despite all those advantages, the Shenzhen government still attaches great importance to the preservation of traditional structures. However, it’s still necessary to arouse public awareness of disappearing traditional structures.

The untold stories and history behind them need to be passed on from generation to generation, just like a torch relay. Now, the torch is in our hands, waiting for us to ignite the night rather than abandon it wherever we like. What we are holding right now is the destiny of traditional values. Whether we can inherit the culture, fulfill the task and set an example for our later offspring all depends on our attitude and actions.
