    Mainland visitor dies in HK

A mainland tourist died in a Hong Kong public hospital on October 20 morning after he was beaten unconscious* by a gang of four men while mediating a dispute between his female colleague and their tour group leader while they were at a jewelry shop on October 18.

Miao Chunqi, a 53-year-old construction contractor* from northeastern Heilongjiang Province, was certified dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at 10:45 a.m. on October 20, according to local police.

Police said the case would be classified as manslaughter*.

    New visa rules for Chinese

Britain will encourage Chinese tourists to visit the country by introducing a two-year multiple-entry visa, the government said on Tuesday during a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The change to visa rules will help Britain cash in on the expanding wealth of China’s middle class by lifting the bureaucracy* and costs associated with visiting Britain on holiday.

Chinese visitors are normally issued a six-month tourist visa at a cost of 85 pounds (US$130).

    Real name required

People must now register their names when delivering parcels after authorities tightened safety inspections following multiple mail bombs.

The delivery service staff must also check the goods before packaging, and all envelopes and parcels must go through an X-ray machine, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the national committee for comprehensive treatment of social management.

    China, UK sign deals

Beijing and London secured deals worth about £40 billion (US$62 billion) on October 21 during President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the United Kingdom.

According to the British Government, the cash generated by the new deals will help create 3,900 jobs across the United Kingdom. The most eye-catching* is an agreement for China to partly finance a U.K. nuclear power plant, which British Prime Minister David Cameron hailed as “historic.” (SD-Agencies)
