Handmade leatherware: a chic pastime

IN the past, when I saw my grandma sewing her cotton-padded clothes or making cloth shoes, I thought she was too old-fashioned. But as time goes by, I realize that I can’t buy a pair of shoes as unique as those she once made. My grandma is too old to pass on to me the skills she acquired in her youth, and soon the flowers and animals she embroidered and the soft garments she sewed will be lost with her.

Like many city dwellers who have abandoned certain traditions, I feel it is time to accept our origins and learn the beauty of handmade traditions.

Designing and hand-making clothes, dying a piece of cloth, brewing rice or fruit wine, baking bread or cakes and making a handbag or a wallet now has become a popular trend, especially for urbanites.

Compared with other handmade crafts, I think making a leather wallet is something fun and easy to do. It requires a very small amount of materials and the procedure is similar to making clothes.

To make a nice, chic wallet, you should start with the wallet you already have. “Learning the structure of a wallet can help you form a whole picture of the one you are going to make,” said a teacher surnamed Cai at a handicraft class last week at Shenzhen MixC’s Harbor House, a place that has held various craft events.

You can draw a sketch of your ideal wallet before working on it or ask a teacher for help. After picturing the wallet, you can prepare the materials.

The first thing is to choose the leather. It comes in many varieties. There is cowhide, deer hide, bison, moose, embossed cowhide, waxed cowhide, dyed or metallic leather and more. Each type will have different qualities. I chose waxed cowhide because it is dense and stiff, which will not be easily worn by water or scratches.

You can visit a local leather shop and ask advice from the owner. Also, you may choose two kinds of leather to make a wallet: the soft material can hold cards and receipts and the hard material can be used as the cover.

You also need waxed strings, sinews and button snaps.

For the tools, you need a metal ruler, a knife or razor blade, gloves, needles, a dot setter and a button press to fix the snaps, a rotary punch, a mallet, a small hammer and a cutting board.

    Procedure:

Mark out the preferred dimensions for your wallet on a piece of leather. Make your cuts with a sharp knife and glide along the ruler’s edge to keep the cut straight. If you will be adding an overlapping tab with a snap button, add no less than two inches to the end of the wallet length to account for it.

Shape your snap tabs at one end of the wallet. When the wallet is folded, they will become one.

Then cut out the cowhide to make your card and change pockets.

Lay the card pockets on top of each other evenly spaced out and use tape to secure them, and then tape them to the body of the wallet that will be on the inside.

Use the rotary punch to punch holes in the card pockets and in the body of the wallet. Using a piece of thick hide under your wallet will both extend the life of your tool and also make it easier to punch the holes.

Stitch each side of the card pocket to the body of the wallet using waxed string.

Then use a lighter to slightly burn the knot so that the wax melts together.

Repeat the steps of stitching until the parts are all sewn together.

Install the button snap. When the wallet is done, use a hammer to lightly beat the wallet, making it flat and the stitches smooth.

If you just want to make a simple wallet, you can ignore the card holders and just fold the leather, cut two pieces for the sides and sew them together.

Remember, try to penetrate the hole with your tool and make sure the strings can easily go through, otherwise, you will spend more effort and time making a nice wallet.

Also, make sure to stitch twice at each beginning and end of a line to seal the edges.
