To raise awareness for men’s health, our school decided to commemorate Movember. Movember is an annual event that involves the growing of mustaches and beards during the month of November to raise awareness for various cancers, particularly prostate cancer. In fact, in the United Kingdom, a man dies of prostate cancer every hour, and every day 100 men are diagnosed with the disease. In the past, we’ve seen male teachers at school grow mustaches, so the student council decided to go a step further by involving the students. Did that mean encouraging students to grow mustaches themselves? Haha, you wish. Instead, the council purchased fake mustaches for students to buy and wear on November 27, 2015. The mustaches were sold during breaks and at lunch for students to wear for the rest of the school day. To make the event more appealing, we included a range of mustaches to choose from and accessories such as glasses and signs. It was a chance for students to have some fun and laugh while taking silly selfies with their friends. In spite of all the laughs and fun, we should all remember to actively encourage male relatives to get check-ups and receive early treatment! We raised 650 yuan (US$101) by selling the mustaches. The money will be donated to a local charity at the end of the school year. |
