Shenzhen students may soon find that learning only one foreign language is not fun enough. Over 40 primary students at the Wenhua School of Nanshan Foreign Language School presented the classic Disney cartoon “Beauty and the Beast” in French last week. In French, the film is called “La Belle et La Bete.”

The show was prepared by a group of Grade-3 and Grade-4 students with the assist of their French teachers from Alliances Françaises, a French language learning institution that cooperates with the school to help students learn French language and culture.

The school said that the successful French drama performed by the students lays a good foundation for the school to set up a French drama society and therefore inspire more students to learn French as their second foreign language.

The Wenhua School has been working with the Guangzhou office of Alliances Françaises since September last year. All students from Grade 3 and Grade 4 took two French classes every week for the first school semester and more students from higher grades will join the program in the coming semester after the Spring Festival.

The Alliances Françaises offers qualified French teachers and textbooks for the students. A group of French language experts often visit the school on a regular basis to see how the students have progressed in their French.

However, the school also said that the French classes are designed to cultivate students’ interests in learning foreign languages. No language proficiency tests will be arranged for the program, according to the school.

After a four-month study, the students have already learned 100 to 200 French vocabulary words, covering a variety of topics on food, colors, animals, festivals, daily supplies and some common adjectives.

The Wenhua School of Nanshan Foreign Language School is the only public primary school that offers French in Shenzhen. Other branch schools of the Nanshan Foreign Language Education Group offer other foreign languages such as German, Japanese and Korean as elective courses.
