The most festive places to spend Chinese New Year (I)
    2016-01-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SPRING Festival, the most important and happiest festival in China, is coming in February, and it’s again the best time of year to explore traditional Chinese celebrations and cultures. Different areas in China have different events, customs and holiday foods. For three weeks, we will tell you about the best places to spend the Chinese New Year!Chengdu,

    Sichuan Province

Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, has the reputation of being a great tourist spot year-round. In addition to national-level scenic spots, it is home to many amazing world cultural and historical heritages. It is also the most important tourism transportation hub in southwestern China.

Even during the Spring Festival, when many cities become quiet and empty, Chengdu is still the place to go if you want to experience a true Chinese Spring Festival.

Chengdu is known for its food and snacks. Therefore, one of the most important festive activities for the locals is eating! Chengdu people normally begin to prepare their Spring Festival goodies about one month before the festival. There are two must-have items for all local families: Sichuan-style sausages and bacon. Every family and restaurant in Chengdu has their secret recipes for making these two delicacies. There are other festive delicacies too, including a lot of traditional snacks that can hardly be found other times of the year.

For travelers who do not know Chengdu very well, the best time to go is right after the Spring Festival during Lantern Festival.

The festival is a traditional folk-custom activity that presents different shapes and styles of traditional lanterns.

The festival always features food events with numerous booths offering different types of traditional snacks and Chengdu’s signature delicacies.

Normally there are temple fairs, which host various recreational activities such as acrobatic and martial arts performances, lantern riddles, stunts, shadow plays and magic shows.

The festival is a traditional family reunion activity for families in Chengdu, so you will also have a chance to experience the local cultures and lifestyles.

Transport: Fly to Chengdu from Shenzhen airport.Anchang,

    Zhejiang Province

Compared to other water towns in Jiangnan Area (the area that is south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, including the Yangtze Delta), such as Shaoxing, Zhouzhuang and Wuzhen, Anchang Township in Zhejiang Province may not be a familiar name for many travelers around the world. However, because of this, it has become an ideal place for those who want to experience a quiet and more traditional Jiangnan lifestyle.

As the best-preserved water town in Shaoxing County, Anchang is a typical and traditional water town without any commercial development. Visitors are rarely seen in the town, and local elderly people enjoy their pleasant and peaceful life by the banks of the rivers in front of their houses.

Due to their traditional lifestyle, it is no surprise that their Spring Festival is also full of traditions and authenticity. With many younger generations returning home for the big occasion, the quiet town turns into a warm home full of family joy and love, which will be ideal for those who want to witness a traditional family celebration for the festival.

Another reason for visiting Anchang during the Spring Festival is its local delicacies. Anchang is known for its sausages and pulled sugar. The small water town is the most famous place for making Jiangnan-style sausages in the region, which taste very different from the sausages made in Sichuan Province. One month before the festival, locals start producing the sausages and hanging them up. The hanging sausages have become a landmark scene for the town.

Pulled sugar is another must-see craft. A lot of local families make their own pulled sugar using traditional techniques, which is to pull the sugar outside in front of their houses.

Transport: Fly to Hangzhou from Shenzhen airport and take a coach to Anchang.
