    1. ‘Jihadi John’ confirmed dead

A media outlet associated with Islamic State on January 19 released a eulogy* for “Jihadi John,” a member of the militant group who gained notoriety* for his filmed execution* of hostages*, the monitoring organization SITE reported.

The militant was identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a British citizen of Arab origin. The U.S. military said in November it was “reasonably certain” it had killed him in a drone* strike.

Emwazi was described in Islamic State’s Dabiq magazine by his nickname “Abu Muharib al-Muhajir.”

    2. Pakistan Taliban militants kill 20

Taliban militants stormed a university in volatile northwestern Pakistan on January 19, killing at least 20 people and wounding dozens a little more than a year after the massacre* of 134 students at a school in the area, officials said.

The attack showed the Islamist militants retain the ability to launch attacks, despite a country-wide anti-terrorism crackdown and a military campaign against their strongholds along the lawless border with Afghanistan.

A security official said the death toll could rise to as high as 40 at Bacha Khan University in Charsadda in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The army said it had concluded operations to clear the campus six hours after the attack began and that four gunmen were dead.

    3. Suicide bomber kills 7 in Kabul

A suicide bomber struck a minibus near the Russian Embassy in downtown Kabul on January 20, killing seven people in the latest deadly attack in the Afghan capital despite an international push to jumpstart* Taliban peace talks.

The powerful bombing heard across Kabul also left 25 people wounded, though it was not clear if the embassy was the intended target. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes just two days after a second round of a four-country meeting in Kabul aimed at reviving talks with the Taliban.

    4. Blizzard shuts down northeastern US

Millions of residents, business owners and workers began digging out on Sunday from a massive blizzard that brought Washington, New York and other northeastern U.S. cities to a standstill*, killing at least 19 people in several states.

The storm was the second-biggest in New York City history, with 26.8 inches (68 centimeters) by midnight on Saturday, just shy of the record 26.9 inches set in 2006, the National Weather Service said.

Thirteen people were killed in weather-related car crashes in Arkansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia on Saturday. One person died in Maryland and three in New York City while shoveling snow. Two died of hypothermia in Virginia, officials said.

    5. Video shows Paris attackers

A new video released by the Islamic State group purports to show the militants who carried out the November 13 attacks in Paris committing atrocities* in IS-controlled territory while plotting the slaughter in the French capital that left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded. The group also threatens to attack Britain.

The 17-minute video, which was released on Sunday, shows the extent of the planning that went into the multiple attacks in Paris, which French authorities have said from the beginning were planned in Syria. It also is likely meant to serve as a recruitment tool to rally followers to the extremists’ sinister* cause. The video was provided online by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi websites.

    6. India nears deal to buy 36 fighter jets

India and France said on Monday that they are close to sealing a multibillion euro agreement for New Delhi to purchase 36 Rafale* fighter jets.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Hollande made the announcement during a joint news briefing in the Indian capital. Hollande is on a three-day visit to India. (SD-Agencies)
