Shenzhen teens head to United Nations
    2016-01-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A child dies of hunger every six seconds. If primary and middle school students acted as diplomats, what solutions could they come up with to global issues such as hunger and malnutrition?

Around 30 local students gave their suggestions for ending world hunger at the final round of the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) 2016 World Teenager Summit, which was held at OCT Middle School on January 24 in Shenzhen. Ten local teenagers won the competition and will represent Guangdong Province at the MMUN 2016 summit at the United Nations in New York City, the United States.

You Dongnan, from the organizing committee, explained that the 30 contestants were divided into six groups, representing different countries, to come up with solutions to tackle global issues through debating and working as a team.

The constants were required not only to play the role of diplomats to earn other countries’ support with fluent English and clear standpoints from their own countries’ point of view, but also to take into account the importance of international cooperation involved with global problems by compromising and negotiating.

The 10 wining contestants will head to the United Nations this March. They will be challenged to create further solutions to global issues with 2,000 other teenagers from around 100 countries. The final resolution that is selected will be submitted to Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations. (Zhang Qian, Liu Qi)
