Our own worst enemy
    2016-02-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

We human beings show our allegiance to Darwinian Theory by believing that we are above all living creatures. Usually, we regard anacondas, crocodiles, tarantulas or other frightening creatures as our worst enemies. However, no matter how horrible those creatures appear, they usually will not attack unprovoked — they attack only for food or to defend themselves. Compared to them, we human beings are more horrible and cruel.

During World War I, more than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died. After the war, buildings were destroyed and the people in them were hurt. We should not forget the cruelty of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and the gore of the Nanjing Massacre. Those catastrophic events were all made by the highest animals — the damned human race. In all ages, the aftermath of wars and atrocities is the most terrible thing. However, it is we human beings who start wars and break peace.

Nowadays, we also attach much importance to the environment because of worldwide pollution and global warming. These environmental problems were all caused by humans. For example, we throw litter about; we scribble on the wall and on places of historical interest; we pour away waste water into rivers; we use technological products that will harm the air; and we pursue a better living standard at the cost of the environment and nature. As a result, our expectations for progress and development will backfire, which means we may be the victims of environmental pollution due to our actions.

Apart from wars and environment issues, we human beings also commit lots of crimes that make us our own worst enemy. It shocks us when we hear about child abuse cases. In addition, there are more and more kids and women being abducted and suffering from inhuman treatment. In daily life, we are all afraid of thieves, psychopathic serial killers, rapists, terrorists and other extremists. They are humans, but they are also the worst enemy we have to deal with because they can think, create and wantonly destroy.

All in all, we always take it for granted that we human beings are the highest and the greatest creatures in the world. However, we also are the worst and the cruelest creatures because of the depravities inside our hearts.
