    1. US Supreme Court Justice Scalia dies

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a tart-tongued* champion of a conservative interpretation of the Constitution, has died at a West Texas ranch resort, government officials said on Saturday. Scalia, the longest-serving justice on the court and its first Italian-American member, was 79.

President Barack Obama, on a trip to California, praised Scalia as “a larger than life presence on the bench” and a deeply influential “brilliant legal mind” with an “incisive* wit.” And Obama flatly rejected Republican demands that he leave the job of replacing the late justice to whomever wins the November elections.

    2. Cliffs collapse into sea after quake

A strong 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch in New Zealand on Sunday, causing cliffs to collapse into the sea but no major damage to the city, which was devastated* by a 2011 quake that killed nearly 200 people.

The quake epicenter* on New Zealand’s south island was 15 kilometers east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of 15 kilometers, said the country’s seismological* body Geonet. Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks. The quake came eight days before the anniversary of the deadly 2011 quake that caused upwards of NZ$40 billion (US$26.52 billion) of damage.

    3. Kim orders more rocket launches

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has praised scientists involved in the country’s recent rocket launch that he said struck a “telling blow*” to enemies and ordered them to press ahead with more launches, state media reported on Monday.

Earlier this month, North Korea ignored repeated international warnings and launched what it said was an Earth observation satellite aboard a rocket. Washington, Seoul and others view the launch as a prohibited test of missile technology and are pushing hard to have Pyongyang slapped with strong sanctions.

    4. Olmert first Israeli PM to go to prison

Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert started serving a 19-month prison sentence for bribery and obstruction* of justice on Monday, becoming the first Israeli premier to be imprisoned and capping* a years-long legal saga that forced him to resign in 2006 amid the last serious round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Olmert walked into the Maasiyahu prison in central Israel hours after he released a video making a last-minute plea* to Israelis meant to salvage* his legacy. In the video, he appealed to the nation to remember his peace-making efforts as leader and denied any wrongdoing in the bribery conviction against him.

He says it is a “painful and strange” time for him and his family and that he is paying a “heavy” price, but also adding that he has accepted the sentence because “no man is above the law.”

    5. Australian police seize $900m in drugs

Australian law enforcement agencies have seized methylamphetamine worth A$1.26 billion (US$900 million) in the country’s largest-ever haul* of the illicit drugs in its liquid form, officials said on Monday.

Four Hong Kong passport holders were arrested in Sydney last month over the import from China of 720 liters of the drugs hidden in boxes of silicon* bra inserts and art supplies, police said in a statement

The liquid could have made about 500 kilograms of high-grade crystal meth*, commonly known in Australia as ice, Australian Federal Police Commander Chris Sheehan said.

    6. Five Palestinian ‘attackers’ killed

Five Palestinians, three of them teenagers, have been shot dead after trying to attack Israeli security forces, Israeli officials said on Sunday.

Another Palestinian, a teenage girl, was critically wounded in another attempted assault, police said. No Israelis were hurt in any of the incidents. (SD-Agencies)
