Reflections on ‘The Art of Stillness’
    2016-02-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The author of “The Art of Stillness” is a lifelong traveler as well as an essayist. He has been to many places in the world and has experienced a lot. But, as a result, he finds that there is nothing more powerful than sitting still. He lists many examples and experiences in order to demonstrate that going nowhere will remake our lives.

As for me, this is a profound article because recently I have been confused with my own life. In an age of acceleration, it seems that everyone should speed up to catch up with others. However, in that process, we have almost lost ourselves.

One day, I suddenly realized that I have been racing around so much that I could never catch up with my life, which means I lost myself.

I have been so depressed that I am not able to concentrate. I find that I am irritable. Luckily, I can still be aware of my problems after reading this article`.

Perhaps it is high time that I got rid of all the extra stuff in order to go nowhere and sit still. Nowadays, as technology develops, it is easy for us to save time, to entertain ourselves, to keep in contact with family or friends and so on. People are working fewer hours than 50 years ago, but we feel as if we’re working more. Why? The only reason is that we make a living but not make a life. Every day, we make full use of the time to finish the work or other things but we never spare time for our mind. What mostly impresses me in the article is one sentence: “And we all know that it’s really one of our greatest luxuries, the empty space.” It is typical of us to cram ourselves with everything. But what a pity! How many of us have an empty place for us to sit still and think?

I realized that I was easily influenced by the outside world. That may be the reason why I am irritable. I really appreciate the author’s outlook on life and I am determined to enjoy my life with stillness. At night, I will do yoga and meditate in order to let my mind have room to breathe.

To sum up, I am on the journey to nowhere and though I still have to fight for my future I will also spare time for stillness.

May everyone enjoy the trip to stillness.
