The first Maker Fair for Shenzhen’s international schools was held at Shenzhen American International School on Saturday, with dozens of innovative entries made by students on display.

Makers from three other schools — namely Shekou International School, Quality School International, Shekou (QSI) and Shenzhen Harbor Primary School — participated in the fair. Their entries of karts made of wood, self-designed fashion clothes, elevators made of Legos and so on added a strong atmosphere of innovation to the fair.

The young makers not only showcased their self-made projects, but also elaborated on their ideas with fair attendees. A local makerspace, Litchee Lab, also offered hands-on making experiences for attendees.

Deborah Summers, the principal at Shenzhen American International School, said the school’s method of project-based learning taught students to solve real-life problems through teamwork. Summers believed that such a teaching method could help teach 21st-century students critical thinking, innovation and creativity.

Maker Faire is a globally recognized fair with makers ranging from tech enthusiasts to scientists who gather and showcase their projects. The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA, and the fair celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 with more than 1,000 maker exhibits and over 120,000 people in attendance.Young makers display their self-made projects at the Maker Fair at Shenzhen American International School on Saturday.
