Elephant riding
    2016-03-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

On a brilliantly sunny morning, groups of tourists successively arrived at the park where they could ride elephants. Our eyes lit up when we saw the elephants. I’ve been looking forward to such an activity. I thought it must be interesting.

The elephants, however, were not interested in our arrival, their heads slightly down with gloomy eyes. They saw so many tourists every day. We were not special or exceptional. And heavy saddle was tightly fastened on their back. They did not like it but could do nothing about it. They were trained to be a type of vehicle. To them, carrying tourists was a kind of routine.

In the forest, the trees were green and luxuriant. Shadows of leaves magically shaped pictures on the ground. It was so quiet that no one would like to disturb the tranquility and other animals. A rhino was sleeping in a pond, half sunk in the water. A deer was lying on the ground. Its skin was so similar to fallen leaves that it was hard to identify. Dong, dong, dong…slow and rhythmic, I felt sleepy with the movement of the elephant.

Carrying out a daily routine is boring to many people. I think it is the same for elephants. Yet despite all that, we still can gain some joy out of it. A young elephant rolled up a twig and swept the dusty lane. When we arrived at a river, the elephant drivers allowed the elephants to stay in the water for a while. As soon as the water wetted their dry skin, a happy and naive smile appeared on their faces. Long noses dipped into the water and delivered water to their mouths from time to time. To these elephants, it was the happiest moment of the day.

Next, the elephants were going to give us a shower. The elephants, which were in charge of this part, looked strong and handsome. We rode the elephants to the middle of the river. Then, the elephants sprayed water at us with its nose according to the instructions of the driver. A minute later, the elephant stopped spraying. However, all of a sudden we were thrown into the water. I had no idea what had happened. I tried my best to hold my breath so I wouldn’t drown. With a struggle, I was eventually out of the water.

Out of the forest, we were led to an elephant breeding yard. Two elephants were playing. One was lying on the ground, the other was trying to push it up with its nose, as if saying, “Wake up, wake up, play with me.” They were so lovely. Suddenly we realized that these elephants had long tusks, but those that entertained us didn’t. We asked the tour guide for the reason. The tour guide replied, “For the sake of security, we cut their tusks.”

“Do you sell their tusks?” we continued. “They are valuable.”

“No…We don’t sell them,” the tour guide said with some hesitation.

On the way back to the hotel, we saw an elephant carrying some crops and gradually disappear into the dark. I wondered, was it fair to train animals to entertain human beings?
