Top high schools start admission interviews on May 15
    2016-04-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Five high schools in Shenzhen are going to carry out admission interviews for independent enrollment on May 15, Shenzhen News reported on Monday.

    The five schools include Shenzhen High School, Shenzhen Experimental High School, Shenzhen Senior High School, Shenzhen Foreign Languages School and Shenzhen No. 3 Senior High School. The applications for admission interviews at these five schools are still open.

    It is the sixth year since public high schools in Shenzhen began to enroll students without looking at the students’ final results of the High School Entrance Exam, which takes place in late June.

    More students are applying for the interviews this year. Approximately 3,000 students have applied for interviews at Shenzhen High School, but only 4 percent of the candidates will earn places to study at the school.

    The competitiveness at Shenzhen Experimental High School is even more intense as nearly 4,000 candidates filed applications, but the acceptance rate is less than 2 percent.

    Tian Juntao is one of the few thousand students who applied for admission interviews.

    “Because all of the schools are organizing the interviews on the same day, it is impossible for me to apply to two schools at one time, so I have to choose the school that I want to study at the most,” said Tian.

    Tian said that he would not be discouraged even if he did not pass the interview. The students will still have a chance to get into their desired schools by sitting the entrance exam in June.

    “I cut out some news and comments regarding domestic and international current affairs from the newspaper every day to keep my son aware of the latest events,” said Tian’s father.

    Li Zhenyu, the director of the Student Affairs Department of Shenzhen Experimental High School, said the first round of selection of the admission interview will stress students’ all-around abilities shown in materials submitted by students.

    “For the face-to-face interview, we mainly assess how the students express themselves with the knowledge they have accumulated and their adaptability under pressure,” said Li.

    Several high schools in Shenzhen started to independently enroll a proportion of students via admission interviews in 2011. Any Grade 9 students with Shenzhen hukou (household registration) from schools that do not have a senior high school can apply for the interviews.

    Candidates can use the schools’ websites to submit application forms. The schools will publish the name list of those who pass the first round of selection. (Zhang Qian)

    Students who pass the interviews will be accepted at the schools in advance. The results of the high school entrance exam would not be taken into account.

    Deadlines for applications for interviews and places available at each school:

    Shenzhen High School, May 3, 120 vacancies;

    Shenzhen Experimental High School, May 4, 70 vacancies;

    Shenzhen Senior High School, May 10, 30 vacancies;

    Shenzhen Foreign Languages School, May 15, 60 vacancies;

    Preparation class for studying overseas of Shenzhen No.3 Senior High School, May 10, 50 vacancies.
