    1. Berlin bans short-term leases

Starting Sunday, Airbnb* is banned in Germany’s capital.

Under the new law, called Zweckentfremdungsverbot, the government will ban short-term leases in Berlin under Airbnb and its competitors in order to free up more affordable housing in the city.

It is “a necessary and sensible instrument against the housing shortage in Berlin,” Andreas Geisel, Berlin’s head of urban development, told local media. “I am absolutely determined to return such misappropriated* apartments to the people of Berlin and to newcomers.”

    2. Iran hails record vote for women

The president of Iran has congratulated voters on electing a record number of women to parliament since before the 1979 Islamic revolution.

It was President Hassan Rouhani’s first reaction to the results of Friday’s run-off* election, in which moderates and reformists won a working majority.

The 17 women elected make up 6 percent of the new cohort* of 290 MPs. Only 16 cleric MPs have been voted in, meaning the new parliament will include more women than religious leaders.

    3. US-to-Cuba cruise ship sets sail

The first U.S. cruise ship bound for Cuba in half a century set sail from Florida on Sunday, marking a new milestone in the rapprochement* between Washington and Havana.

The Adonia, a vessel from the Carnival cruise’s Fathom line, raised its anchors* and departed from Miami, the heart of the Cuban diaspora in the United States, around 4 p.m.

The ship — with 700 passengers aboard — arrived at the port of Havana on Monday, its first stop on the island. The voyage is the first of what Carnival says will become weeklong cruises to Cuba twice a month.

    4. Kenya torches world’s biggest ivory bonfire

Eleven giant pyres* of tusks* were set alight on Saturday as Kenya torched its vast ivory stockpile in a grand gesture aimed at shocking the world into stopping the slaughter of elephants.

Huge white clouds of smoke spiraled into the sky as the flames took hold, fuelled by thousands of liters of diesel* and kerosene* injected through steel pipes.

Lighting the fire in Nairobi’s national park, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta demanded a total ban on trade in ivory to end the “murderous” trafficking and prevent the extinction of elephants in the wild.

“The height of the pile of ivory before us marks the strength of our resolve,” Kenyatta said, before thrusting a burning torch onto the ivory.

    5. Survivor rescued 13 days after quake

Crews have rescued a 72-year-old survivor of Ecuador’s deadly earthquake almost two weeks after it struck the South American country, Venezuela announced.

A visiting Venezuelan search team located Manuel Vasquez, who had been trapped under rubble since the 7.8-magnitude quake that killed 660 people, the Venezuelan embassy in Quito said on its website.

They found Vasquez “making sounds in a partially collapsed building” on Friday in Manabi province while doing inspections for structural problems, it said.

    6. Trump vows better China, Russia ties

U.S. Republican front-runner Donald Trump has vowed to seek better relations with Russia and China if elected president in November and says he will make U.S. allies bear more of the financial burden for their defense.

In a major speech on April 27, Trump delivered a withering* critique* of Barack Obama’s foreign policy, saying the Democratic president has let China take advantage of the United States and failed to defeat Islamic State militants. He pledged to “shake the rust off America’s foreign policy.”(SD-Agencies)
