Graduates positive about labor market despite fierce competition
    2016-05-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Multiple surveys showed that graduates from universities this year in China hold optimistic attitudes towards the labor market, though the number of graduates is hitting historical highs, Chinanews.com reported.

More than 7.56 million students are going to graduate from higher education institutions this year. With the present gloomy economic status, Chinese graduates this year will face a challenge finding jobs.

But the situation does not bother most of the graduates. Several surveys showed that many are positive about finding jobs after graduation. Most of the students surveyed said they think the current situation is acceptable and many expect an average month salary below 5,000 yuan (US$763).

A zhaopin.com report showed that graduates are optimistic because they haven’t tried to find work yet.

The report also pointed out that the students were born and raised in a better-off era and have less pressure than the previous generations.

A graduate from Northwest Normal University, going by the alias Sun Tiantian, said that she would choose a job based on her interests. “I believe that I will eventually live the life that I want by working hard at the job that I like doing,” said Sun.

Several reports conducted by the job-seeking websites indicated that graduating students take jobs they like and not just to earn a living.

Many graduating students do not expect high salaries at their first job. Sun said that she expected around 5,000 yuan for her first job.

The average expected salary is 4,985 yuan, according to Zhaopin.com, while statistics provided by 58.com, another information classification website, found that more than 60 percent of graduates are expecting monthly salaries less than 4,000 yuan. Ganji.com said that over half of students expect a salary below 3,000 yuan.

Liu Kan, a person in charge of the job listings on 58.com, told Chinanews.com that students have underestimated their value in the labor market. The situation also reflected the fact that many graduates want to find jobs before planning a career path.

The report provided by Ganji.com suggested that administrative posts are the most popular jobs among graduates who wish to work in offices.
