Residents victims of burglary spree
    2016-May-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ITEMS worth around 10,000 yuan (US$1,525) were stolen from six apartments in the same building in the Yangri Wanban housing estate in Nanshan District on Wednesday morning, the Shenzhen Evening News reported Thursday.

“My backpack and coin purse were opened and tossed on the floor in my living room. The apartment’s door was unlocked also,” a woman, surnamed Zhang, said she discovered the situation after waking up around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Two laptops and a cellphone also went missing from her daughter’s bedroom.

“It’s frightening to think about it. The thief was so close to us. It’s lucky that we just lost our property,” said Zhang.

A man, surnamed Li, said he believed the theft happened after 2:30 a.m., because he got home at 1 a.m. and fell asleep around 2:30 a.m. Some cash was taken from his apartment.

The apartments burgled are located between the fifth and 17th floor of one building. Zhang said she presumed the thief entered her house through the balcony, since her place’s lock was not damaged. She also showed the reporter a footprint left on her air conditioner radiator. The size and the pattern suggest they were left by a grown man. Many other victims discovered footprints on their balconies.

None of the robbed apartments had anti-thief netting over the balcony, a metal pipe runs up the side of the building beside the balconies.

The Chinese news report said the housing compound was poorly managed.

“There is no entry control. And I often see lots of strangers lying on the bench in our estate. The property management does not have the security guards patrol either. And the wall surrounding our estate is cracked and has a hole that has not been repaired for a year,” said a resident.

The director of the property management office, surnamed Wang, said, “We think we did do our job.” But he refused to comment on the burglary or answer the questions raised by the residents.

Wang said his company had handed over surveillance footage to the police. The case is still under investigation.
