With the theme of “Sustainable Development in China and the World: Understanding the Economics of the New Normal,” the 2016 Conference of the Chinese Economists Society (CES) was held at the Peking University HSBC Business School, Shenzhen over the weekend.

As the economy enters into the “new normal,” China and the world are confronting a series of issues as an economic slowdown becomes inevitable. The issues, including the definition of “new normal” and the Chinese economic prospect for supply-side reform, have provided impetus for scholars to study the Chinese economy from new perspectives.

The annual conference this year featured 12 keynote speeches, 50 paper presentation sessions, and seven round-table forums. More than 300 economists and policymakers from the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, China and other countries discussed Chinese economic issues and new economic theories and research.

The two-day conference featured world-renowned scholars and experts who delivered reports and shared their insights with participants. Dwright Perkins, emeritus of Harvard University and former director of the Harvard Eastern Asia Research Center, shared his expertise on China’s economic development. Other scholars from the world’s top universities also gave speeches on the duties and power of the central banks, how to restore stable growth in a turbulent world economy and other finance-related topics.

Many influential Chinese scholars and economists also attended this conference to exchange their views with their international counterparts. They addressed China’s economic downturn under the supply-side perspective as well as China’s economic cycles and long-term potential.

The participants of the conference also made a visit to Huawei, the leading technology company in China. The organizers of the conference think that the management models and business patterns of Huawei have long puzzled the outside world. The company offered scholars the opportunity to conduct field studies and gain a better understanding of Huawei.

CES holds conferences in North America and China each year.
