THE death toll in an industrial safety accident at an aluminum plant in Central China’s Henan Province rose to 11, as rescue work ended Thursday.
The accident happened at around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, when a piece of falling equipment hit employees of the engineering and construction company as they were dismantling the aluminum plant in the provincial capital of Zhengzhou City, according to the Henan branch of the Aluminum Corp. of China.
In addition to the 11 dead, another eight were injured. Two are still in critical condition.
Police said 23 people were working at the site when the accident occurred, three escaped without injury.
Kong Nianlin, one of the survivors, said as he fell his safety belt caught something on the wall.
He said many of his co-workers were not wearing safety attire.
One person has been detained by the police.
The engineering and construction company is owned by the Henan branch of the Aluminum Corp. of China.(Xinhua)
