Hugging machine helps calm autism sufferers
    2016-07-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    自闭症拥抱机来了

Mary Temple Grandin, a professor at Colorado State University in the United States and world-renowned autism spokesperson, created a deep-pressure device to calm her own symptoms* of hypersensitivity*.

And now a Denmark-based firm has transformed this “hug machine” into a commercial model that is ideal for schools and specialists.

Called OrbisBox, this device creates the “squeeze effect” with foam covered panels and light and sound therapy to help those suffering with autism and stress.

Those suffering from this disorder have a difficulty processing sensory information — they may be over or under-sensitive or both.

These differences can have a profound effect on their daily lives, as many individuals with this disorder have meltdowns or do not respond at all when met with this type of information.

With Gloria Mundi Care’s OrbisBox, users can lie down on both their side and stomach inside the polyurethane* foam covered box to combat their fears of being touched or sooth their nerves.

Once the individual is inside the device, the panels will start to move in slowly and press against them — similar to a hug.

There are also built-in Bose speakers so the individual can listen to soothing music or sounds if necessary.
