Fundraising for Spanish DJ on Sunday

A SPECIAL benefit party will be held from 7 p.m. to late night Sunday at The Brew Bar & Bistro on Fuhua Road in Futian District to raise money for , a Shenzhen-based Spanish DJ, who suffered a stroke Monday and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Linares, also known as DJ Melou, has been living in Shenzhen for almost 20 years. He co-founded Yeyan Radio with Pax Webb, a Canadian DJ, and was a technician for Shenzhen Live, an English radio program that lasted for one year.

According to Webb, Linares’ condition “has since stabilized, but he needs to remain in intensive care for some time before starting the long, difficult process of rehabilitation.” He needs to spend the rest of the week in the ICU and no visitors are allowed before he is transferred to a general ward.

Webb set up a WeChat group of over 300 people to update news on Linares’ condition. A continuous flow of donations from the local expat community has been going directly to Webb or through the group.

“Carmelo is a well-known person and respected in the Shenzhen expat community, he is loved by everyone,” said Webb.

“For anyone that knows Carmelo he has such a wonderful, caring and loving personality. Always with a smile on his face, he’s loved by many people in the community,” said Rebecca Alice Ward, a local Briton.

At Sunday’s event, visitors are encouraged to bring a photo of Linares and themselves to the party and add it to a photo album, which Webb said he will take to Linares in the hospital. Those who have digital photos can send them to WeChat ID: paxwebb or email to pax@asiaclubzone.com in advance.

Each visitor needs to pay a 100 yuan (US$15) entry fee. The entry fee and 10-percent of all food and drink sales will be donated to Linares for hospital bills, Webb said.

Due to Linares’ unstable condition, Webb said he had no idea how much the treatment would cost. He also said Linares’ father will soon arrive in Shenzhen from Spain.
