    Renowned scholar dies

LU GUSUN, an English literature professor at Fudan University, passed away at Shanghai Xinhua Hospital on Thursday afternoon at the age of 76.

Lu, who was born in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, spent his whole academic career at Fudan University where he studied English language and literature as a student.

He is best-known for compiling China’s first major English-Chinese dictionary, an award-winning 4,212-page tome in two volumes, with more than 200,000 entries and more than 16 million words.

    2 ex-officials expelled

TWO former senior officials have been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC), according to two statements from China’s anti-corruption watchdog Thursday.

Zhang Yue, a former standing committee member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) committee in North China’s Hebei Province, and Yang Luyu, former mayor of Jinan City in East China’s Shandong Province, have been expelled from the Party and removed from public office.

The two were found to have been involved in corruption and violated the Party’s frugality code, according to The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

    3 killed in car crash

THREE teachers from schools in Shanghai’s Jinshan District were killed and another severely injured in a car crash Wednesday in the Nagqu Prefecture of Tibet when they were having a self-driving trip, the district education bureau said Thursday.

The bureau said the three were killed on the scene. The other victim is temporarily out of life danger but his condition is still at risk of worsening due to influences of high-altitude stress. The victims were in a group of 11 teachers, all from Jinshan, who were on self-driving tours with three cars to Tibet and Yunnan.
