The battle of Fort de Guerre (II)
    2016-08-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Zheng Tiancheng 郑天呈 Xiamen No.1 High School, Xiamen, Fujian, China
Oaks Christian School, Westlake Village, California, US

Suddenly he was awakened by the sound of a trumpet from below — it was a battle call. The gates flung open and Scar’s phantoms dashed out on horses’ skeletons. They raised their halberds and began the slaughter. They had a commander behind them who gave them all power. The smell of human blood was sent up to the top of the mountain, all the way into Lord Penton’s nostrils. The wailing of his men echoed in the valley.

The human army was routed, but Lord Penton was coming to the rescue. With eyes like those of an eagle, Lord Penton recognized the commander and sent a flying arrow. The arrow pierced his forehead, and the commander drifted away like smoke. The enemy’s charge failed, and thousands of lives were saved.

The Lord of the Americas commanded his army to dig a tunnel from the faraway woods. The tunnel went deeper under the earth than any tunnel that had ever been dug, and it went all the way to the foot of the tower. This secret tunnel was so well hidden that even the dark knight did not realize the potential threat. Day by day the soldiers worked, and Lord Penton oversaw the whole process. After a few months’ work, the tunnel was built and victory was at hand. On a dark and starless night, the human army moved quietly through the tunnel. The closer they got to the tower, the softer their paces became. Finally, they arrived at the foundation of the evil tower from where the dark knight reigned. They held their breath and clinched their fists, for the day of freedom had finally come!

“For the freedom of the earth, launch the final charge!” Lord Penton yelled. “Fight for freedom!” the warriors cried. The army sprang out of the ground and stormed the tower. They climbed the tower fearlessly, chopping down every foe along the way. Many fell, but more stepped up. Never has there been a moment in history when humans were as united as this. Level by level they captured the tower and finally managed to reach the top. However, doom was waiting there for the human army, for the power of Hell was with the dark knight. Scar sent out the three-headed dog Cerberus, and in each of the beast’s mouths a quarter of the army was devoured.

    “Fall back!” Lord Penton commanded.

“Are you letting victory slip away from our hands?” The fearless warriors questioned him.

“No, but I will fight alone,” Lord Penton answered in a deep voice. He pulled out his mighty sword, which was cast in the fire of Olympus, and they went forward. With three swift and firm blows, Cerberus fell dead on the ground. Then Lord Penton said to his mount, “Let’s win this together, Pegasus.” His mighty horse stretched out its wings and soared into the sky.

The most important combat in human history had begun: General Penton the Sovereign Lord of the Americas versus Scar the Dark Knight of Hell.

The dark knight drew his sword of flames, and Lord Penton answered with his sword of lightning. The two swords clashed in the midst of the sky, sending out a burst of blinding light, but neither sword could overpower the other. Because the power of each sword was so strong, both of them collapsed and broke into pieces. The combat seemed to end in a draw, but Lord Penton grasped his final bit of strength and lifted up his broken sword. “The heavens give me power!” He yelled out in a loud voice. Behold, a lightning bolt came down from Heaven and struck the dark knight right on his forehead. Scar gave a final shout in pain and horror, and his armor fell into pieces. Scar himself vanished and was never seen again.

There stood Lord Penton alone, on top of the tower. He had won the combat and saved the world. Though the human army had lost many of their precious warriors, they also captured Fort de Guerre, defeated Dark Knight Scar, and achieved the impossible.

“The reign of darkness is no more. We are finally at peace again,” Lord Penton proclaimed in a steady voice.

    “Rejoice, the human race!”
