The world’s first working DJ turntables made from a pizza box has been unveiled by Pizza Hut. Created by U.K. firm Novalia, pizza fans can unfold the box and begin playing music by grime DJ P Money and Rinse FM’s DJ Vectra. Despite being made mostly out of cardboard, the box features two decks, a crossfader*, pitch volumes, cue buttons and the ability to rewind music. The playable DJ decks also sync* via Bluetooth to the user’s smartphone or laptop with DJ software such as Serato. Using conductive ink, users can mix, scratch and release their inner DJ by tapping and sliding their fingers over the controls. Kate Stone, founder of Novalia, came up with the concept of using conductive ink on everyday objects when she was doing her PhD at Cambridge University. “We have a piece of paper with conductive ink on it, and then add onto that a small circuit board with a couple of chips. One chip runs some capacitive* touch software, so we know where we’ve touched it, and the other to run, quite often, some wireless software so the piece of paper can connect,” said Stone. P Money and Rinse FM DJ, Vectra, recently showed off the playable pizza box’s musical capabilities. “It takes a little while to get your head around the fact you’re controlling a mix through a cardboard pizza box but it’s crazy just how responsive and sensitive the controls are,” said Rinse FM’s DJ Vectra. This innovation follows Pizza Hut’s other recent launches — the emoji menu. Novalia has previously worked with DJ Qbert to create the world’s first interactive DJ Decks in an album cover.(SD-Agencies) |
