Our mini ‘world house’
    2016-08-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

For most of us, the university is a place where we learn, live and work. With more communication between countries, universities have become more comprehensive and international. As far as I am concerned, nowadays the university is like a mini world house in which everyone should learn to live together in peace.

Actually, the mini world house developed from the local house. Before, students were stuck studying in different regions of the world because of inconvenient transportation and insufficient international communication. Therefore, universities were full of local students and they made friends only with fellow locals. They were, in other words, isolated from each other.

However, students are experiencing globalization nowadays. What is more important is that students are benefiting from globalization as well. Thanks to the improvement of transportation as well as Internet technology, students all over the world can study abroad so as to broaden their horizons, search for overseas job opportunities and learn about other countries’ cultures. Now it is commonplace to walk into your university and then say hello to your foreign classmates. In contemporary universities, students have different nationalities with different colors and cultural backgrounds coming together to study, to live and to work. There is no denying that the university is like a mini world house.

Now that our universities have provided us with a mixed environment, it is necessary that we students should live together in harmony. If students coming from different countries are able to live in peace, they can make more friends, learn about their cultures and help each other when doing research. To some extent, students act as the envoy of cultural exchanges.

Although students should learn to live together in peace, it doesn’t mean that students should blindly agree and accept others’ ideas or forcibly instill values into their classmates. As an undergraduate, he or she should learn how to think critically and have the courage to raise doubts on some issues. Keep a level head and learn from others selectively. Furthermore, students and teachers should respect others’ values as well as cultural customs and maintain the features of their own nation.

To be brief, universities today are more like a salad bowl in which students with different backgrounds gather to exchange views and learn from each other. It is a real mini world house which requires everyone to live together in peace. Only in a peaceful place can students improve and get ready for their future.
