Atonement (II)
    2016-09-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Huang Guosheng

At night, Zhou had to step into his home. When his mother knew that he’d failed in the pre-exam, she suddenly fainted lying down on the ground and was soon rescued by his father.

In the coming summer Zhou started to deal with how to join the remedial class for the college entrance examination next year. He longed to attend the famous Gaozhou Middle School in the neighboring Gaozhou County. He knew that he needed four documents to apply to enter the school: the personal permit to join the college entrance examination, the score sheet from the college entrance examination, the student’s learning record from middle school and the residence identity certificate in Gaozhou County.

But he couldn’t pass the pre-exam, so how could he enter there? After discussing with Fuqiang, he started the underground operation. In 1986 the lowest admitting score for liberal arts in Guangdong Province was 520. Fuqiang and Zhou Haonan thus selected Zhou Xiaotian, one good classmate with the score of 516. However, as Zhou Xiaotian’s home was in Yangmei Town, over 100 kilometers away at the southernmost end of Huazhou County, it was not easy to get there.

At 4 a.m. early one morning Zhou Haonan alone rode a bike and set off towards the direction of Yangmei Town. At dusk, he finally arrived at Zhou Xiaotian’s home. However, Zhou Xiaotian’s parent said that Zhou Xiaotian had gone to his relative’s home in Zhanjiang City about 100 kilometers away. Hearing that, Zhou was as dumbstruck as a wooden chicken. But after seriously thinking, he continued onto Zhanjiang City. Later on he was so tired, he could hardly move when he arrived in Liangdong Town in Lianjiang County.

Early the next morning, he went on and at nightfall he finally reached the destination. Zhou Haonan told Zhou Xiaotian that he’d like to borrow his personal permit for the college entrance examination to use because Zhou Xiaotian had already said before that if he wouldn’t pass the college entrance examination this year he wouldn’t do it again, and would go into business with his family members instead. Meanwhile, it was fortunate that such a permit was in Zhou Xiaotian’s luggage, whereupon Zhou Xiaotian took it out and readily handed it to Zhou Haonan.

The following morning Haonan returned to Huazhou County. He directly went to the office building of the Huazhou Education Bureau for “pre-investigation” where there were many teachers, students and their parents who were reading over the college entrance examination scores happily and tearfully.

At 12 a.m. that night, which was moonless and windy, Zhou stealthily climbed over the wall of Huazhou Education Bureau and tiptoed quietly to the wall on which all the students’ college entrance examination scores were stuck. By night light, he found the name of Zhou Xiaotian then gently cut the score slip off with a small knife. However, not only did he cut Zhou Xiaotian’s score slip off, but also those on the envelope which was linked together with Zhou Xiaotian’s score. Then he hurriedly left. The next morning he returned home.

After that, he unfolded Zhou Xiaotian’s permit and carefully removed the photo of Zhou Xiaotian. Then he replaced it with his own, and rewrote the missing characters by using a toothpick dipped in red stamp-pad ink. Then, he cut off Zhou Xiaotian’s score sheet. His mother saw what he was doing and was suspicious and asked what he was doing.
