AN investigation has dismissed accusations over the repair of the Great Wall in Suizhong County, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, the Beijing News reported Saturday.
The section of the Great Wall, known for its historical wildness, is now barely recognizable. Pictures showing the paved-over section have triggered widespread criticism. Netizens have complained how the wall’s historical quality has been ruined by this new road-like appearance.
A joint investigation team of both State and provincial heritage authorities looked into the incident Friday, following the accusations over the manner of the restoration.
Fu Qingyuan, an expert in the investigation, checked the wall and told reporters that the aim of paving over the wall was to protect the wall, not fix it entirely.
The 12-cm layer of concrete that covers the wall, Fu said, strengthens its base and protects the already damaged wall from further weathering.
“To restore the wall to its original form is not necessary. The repair was a life-saving construction which needed to comply with the minimum-intervention principle,” added Fu.
Local cultural authorities told media that the repairs were approved by provincial and national departments. The whole project was both legal and sensible. Chinese tourists refer to this section as the most wildly beautiful part of the Great Wall.
