12 killed in bus accident
TWELVE people died and 28 others were injured after a bus and a truck collided Saturday evening in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, local authorities said.
The accident occurred at 8:07 p.m. in Yakeshi City, administered by Hulunbuir City, said a statement issued by the government of Hulunbuir. The truck was trying to avoid a horse that dashed onto the road when the collision happened, it said.
Rider dies
SERBIAN rider Dejan Maric died after a fatal collision at the 4th Mt. Wuyi Cycling Race in Southeast China’s Fujian Province yesterday.
The organizers called off the 99-km race after the 25-year-old Maric collided with other riders at the 16km mark. Maric was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died of multiple serious injuries, said the organizers. The organizers expressed deep condolences to Maric’s family and promised to take good care of those injured in the accident.
Court fines bank
A BANK in Central China’s Henan Province has been fined 100,000 yuan (US$14,995) for refusing to assist the court in transferring a defaulter’s savings.
A defaulter, or “laolai” in Chinese, refers to the person who fails to honor court orders to pay off their debts. In this case, the defaulter named Zhao Jun still owed 50,000 yuan to the court as a penalty for criminal fraud.
Climber dies
CHINA’S first climber reaching the top of Mount Qomolangma died at 81 of lung disease last week.
Qu Yinhua, who was born in 1935 in Sichuan Province, ascended Mount Qomolangma on May 25, 1960. He is also the first person in the world to reach the world’s top from the north side of the Himalaya Mountains.
