Why we learn foreign languages
    2016-09-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Liu Peng

With globalization and the rapid growth of transnational corporations, nowadays we have more chances to get in touch with foreign languages. However, some people harbor the idea that the only reason to learn them is for the purpose of traveling or working overseas. From my point of view, this reasoning is limited and too exclusive and there are actually lots of other reasons for learning foreign languages.

First of all, it is obvious that many young people prefer to go overseas to study and get a bachelor’s degree from a foreign university. They are required to learn the local language before they are admitted to prestigious universities. Without mastering the foreign languages, students will definitely find it difficult studying there.

Besides, studying foreign languages is trendy now and it offers more opportunities for us to broaden our horizons and exchange different ideas with different people. With the development of Internet technology, we have access to foreign social media, which presents all the articles in English or other local languages.

If we can learn a foreign language well, we could rapidly get foreign news or messages firsthand. In addition, speaking a local language will help us to communicate with the local people without any trouble, which makes conversation more efficient.

Furthermore, learning a new language is an essential tool for the citizens in this global village. As can be obviously seen, people who don’t know any additional languages would find it quite hard for themselves to succeed and maintain a high salary in the future, because there will always be competitive candidates with better language backgrounds. If we want to play an important role in this competitive workplace, it’s never too late to learn a new language.

More importantly, we should not overestimate the significance of it, with the master of a new language, we can rely on this ever after.

It is a brilliant tool for you to enjoy the convenience of working and studying in the information age. Actually, it’s better to stay hungry for knowledge throughout our lives. As a saying goes, the richer the knowledge a man possesses, the more thirsty he is for pursuing it.

In conclusion, each person has his or her own ideas and pursuits as their reasons to learn new languages, and we should respect them.

But we had better bear this in mind: In this information era and in the wave of globalization, the real reason for leaning another language is that language is the first step to collecting information and communicating with people around the world. Only by mastering foreign languages can we truly stand on the first wave of globalization.
