Underground lines link residential, commercial clusters

THE Huaqiangbei area in Futian District will become an underground transport hub with four Metro lines and five stations when Line 7 is put into operation at the end of October.

The three-storey underground space covering 46,000 square meters includes two floors for Huaqiangbei Station of Line 7, which is connected with lines 1, 2, 3 and its Huaxin Station through 900-meter-long underground business corridor on the first floor.

“Passengers to Huaqiangbei can get off at Huaxin Station, which is located at the north end of Huaqiang Road North and walk through the business corridor that is connected with ground-level shopping centers through 42 exits,” said Gao Min, head of the design department of Shenzhen Metro Construction Headquarters, yesterday.

With the opening of the V-shape Line 7 and N-shape Line 9, a circle, areas of Nanshan, Futian and Luohu will be connected like they never were before.

The 30-km Line 7 starts from Xili, Nanshan District and ends at Tai’an Road in Luohu. It has 28 stations, including 10 interchange stations with other lines. Passengers can change to Line 1, Line 11 and Line 9 at Chegongmiao Station, Line 5 at Xili and Tai’an stations, Line 2 at Antuo Hill and Huaqiang North stations, Line 3 at Shixia, Huaxin and Tianbei stations, Line 4 at Fumin Station and Line 9 at Hongling North Station.

“It only takes 10 seconds to transfer between Line 7 and 9 at Chegongmiao Station, where riders can walk directly to the train of the other line at the other side of the platform,” Wang Wei, an employee with China State Construction Engineering Co., contractor of the project, said to reporters who attended the test ride yesterday.

According to Shenzhen Metro Operation Headquarters, a full-length trip on Metro Line 7 will take 55 minutes. Residents in Xili will have a quick access to Huanggang Checkpoint, one of the largest land checkpoints in China and the only checkpoint in Shenzhen that is open 24 hours a day.

A test ride of 25-km Line 9 yesterday from Hongshuwan in Nanshan District to Wenjin Road in Luohu took 45 minutes. Metro Line 9 will go through Meilin, an area plagued by traffic jams. It will make commutes easier for Xiasha, Chegongmiao and Meilin areas and will relieve traffic on Caitian and Xinzhou roads, according to Shenzhen Metro Group Co. Ltd., which estimates the two lines will serve about 700,000 passengers a day.
