Debra Li debra_lidan@163.com Metro Vocal Group (MVG), whose members are four Americans based in Hong Kong, will release a new album on November 1. Titled “500 yds,” this album will be the third from the a cappella group, whose track list includes English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Tagalog songs as well as six original compositions. The original songs are themed on an inner journey of making music in Hong Kong and heartbreaking love. Established 19 years ago, the cappella group now has four members: Sean Oliver, Eric Monson, Kevin Thornton and Michael Lance. They made Hong Kong their home in 2005 and have since performed throughout Asia. Their repertoire* is a mix of traditional music fused* with rock and pop as well as covers of pop songs worldwide. In an a cappella fashion, the group uses their voices to imitate percussion*, trumpets*, guitars and miscellaneous* sound effects as well as full melodies with harmony*. They released their first Cantonese MV in 2009, their cover of Joey Yung’s “My Pride,” and it was an instant hit. They followed that success in 2010, releasing a Cantopop MV covering “Boundless Ocean, Vast Skies,” a song made famous by Hong Kong rock group Beyond. The MVG has since received over 20 million views worldwide on video sharing websites like YouTube and Youku. Their previous albums are titled “Music for a Metropolis” and “No Borders.” |
