Forget the stairs, now you can walk vertically
    2016-11-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    人力电梯让你垂直爬楼!

Trekking up and down long flights of stairs could soon be a thing of the past with the invention of a manual lift.

The Vertiwalk contraption* is a pulley operated elevator that is powered using your arms and legs.

Vertiwalk has been designed by a team from the Rombout Frieling Lab in the Netherlands.

On its website, Rombout Frieling Lab said: “Increasingly, stairs become bottlenecks with greater heights and an aging society. Elevators are often no alternative: too complex, expensive and energy-consuming*.”

Sitting in a chair, the user pulls two ropes with their arms, which moves the whole seat upwards. The user then pushes up with their legs, propelling them up the device.

Rombout clarified that the device only needs users to shift a fraction of their bodily weight between a seat and a footplate, or could be operated by arm for those with leg impairments.

Rombout said: “By using harmonious movements and smart materials, only 10 percent of the effort of walking stairs is needed to bridge multiple floors. This provides a solution for the growing number of people who are unable to take stairs.”(SD-Agencies)
