Penguin gets wetsuit to keep warm after feather loss

The ancient proverb claims birds of a feather flock together, but one SeaWorld Orlando penguin is stealing the show despite having few feathers of her own.

Wonder Twin, a female Adelie penguin at the park’s “Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin” exhibit, began losing feathers on her side and back earlier this month.

Feather loss can be detrimental* for penguins in their natural habitats, but Wonder Twin is now doing swimmingly thanks to a wetsuit designed especially for her. Wonder Twin was having a hard time regulating her body temperature in the frigid* setting, as she had nothing to keep the water away from her skin.

The suit was thus designed by SeaWorld’s aviculture* team to mimic the short, broad and closely-spaced feathers that once made up Wonder Twin’s coat.

This provides insulation* that especially helps to keep Wonder Twin warm in the water, according to aviculturist TJ Dray.

Now she can happily swim, eat, sleep and chill out with her fellow penguins.

“Being able to make that kind of a difference for her is really cool,” Dray said.

Maria Barreto, a wardrobe craftsperson at SeaWorld who created the wetsuit, called it the “best project” she has ever had. Now Wonder Twin is back among her flock, just with a special kind of tuxedo to rock.(SD-Agencies)
