Students awarded for creative genomics ideas

    深圳大学及暨南大学学生在全国大学生基因应用创意大赛中获奖

    Two teams of students from Shenzhen University and Jinan University were awarded monetary prizes and presents for their innovative application ideas in genomics at a national competition for college students.

    The Shenzhen University team won the prize for the most creative businesses application with their proposals and research on alkaline cellulose, while the Jinan University team won the top prize for innovative application with their intestinal microecology pharmacogenomics project.

    The competition, known as the National Genomic Application Ideas Competition for College Students, was co-hosted by the Yantian District Government, BGI and a gene alliance in Shenzhen with the purpose of attracting college students’ attention to genomics application, thereby encouraging more people to work in the field.

    Also, one of the major purposes behind holding such a contest was to promote knowledge in genomics application and bring academic research into people’s daily life, according to BGI.

    The contest has won active response and engagement among college students all around the country. Some high school students even participated in the competition.

    The final contest took place at Dameisha in Yantian District on November 12.

    According to the organizers, next year’s competition will be initiated during the first half of 2017 and they expect more contestants to join the competition with new ideas in genomics application.
