Our existence is worthwhile

“Know thyself” was inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo. It reminds us of the necessary process of knowing ourselves. However, humans in history have spent a longer time learning about nature, science and technology than themselves. In fact, learning about ourselves is, to some extent we can say, more important than learning about the outer world.

Recently, I read an article called ”The Damned Human Race,” which was written by Mark Twain. He uses a humorous tone as well as critical sentences to illustrate his attitude toward human beings. Mark Twain denounces that human beings are avaricious and miserly. We take revenge and are loose in our morals. We are likely to be brutish and cruel. In addition, indecency, vulgarity and obscenity are considered to be confined to men. In a word, Mark Twain holds a pessimistic attitude toward human beings.

However, as far as I am concerned, I don’t totally agree with his accusations.

Above all, we are capable of learning and thinking. As a result, we have the passion to learn from our ancestors so that we are able to stand on their shoulders to see further. Besides, we can use our brain to think, to write and to create. Over the years, human beings have discovered countless scientific truths related to space, substance and other things intangible.

Also, we have created written language. People write down words, sentences and passages in order to express their thoughts and inspire others during tough times. What’s more, there is an important difference between man and animals; man will think twice and consider the consequences before taking action, but animals will not. Man acts rationally to ensure the long-term benefits of his actions while animals just finish their work by instinct.

In addition, humans have love and consciousness. We treat our fellows as our family. When we are accidentally hurt by others, we will forgive them. When knowing someone is in trouble, we will feel sympathetic toward them and do favors for them without hesitation. And when we do something wrong, we will feel guilty and ashamed. All of these feelings are derived from universal love. It is a kind of love for everyone.

As the saying goes, “Every coin has two sides.” There is no denying that human beings have shortcomings and we may harbor shadows in our minds. However, we cannot ignore the bright side of humanity because without mankind, the world would have been much less colorful. Now that we have survived here, we have our values. Our existence is worthwhile!
