Angel and demon (III)
    2017-01-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Zeng Ruijia

Imagine a track, one person is running a marathon, another is running 100 meters and the third one is jogging with a dog. Will the marathon runner feel stressed when he sees the ruddy face and the muscular body of a 100-meter runner? Definitely not, he knows he is running a marathon. Will the jogger feel fear when he sees the marathon runner running for hours? Absolutely not, he knows he is enjoying jogging with a dog.

Your university life reminds me of mine which was, indeed, slightly different. My generation is always called “The Cinderella Generation.” When we were your age, the Chinese economy was beginning to grow. Thus, if we dreamed bigger and worked harder, it was possible to see that the son of a rice farmer could become a president; the son of a peddler selling bread could become a doctor and the daughter of a dock worker could become an international lawyer. In our times, we witnessed our pumpkin transformed into a sparkling coach. However, university students today appear to be so optimistic and confident about themselves and the future that they don’t need to be as industrious and cautious as my generation who set our goals at an early age and worked for them. But I prefer to interpret it as they try to escape from the reality or the obstacles in the future. As we all know, the rate of unemployment now is soaring unpredictably and “The Boomerang Generation” is appearing.

To be honest, I am worried that my little girl will become the next “Boomerang,” not because you have no fame or money, but because you cannot find meaning and value in your life. But, luckily, I am happy to know that you are aware of your current situation and are trying to change it. That is a good start.

Besides, stepping out of the dormitory, staying in the library with your like-minded friends and reading extensively can help you a lot.

Most importantly, your dad is always here. If you encounter some problems no matter in study or daily life, email me or call me without hesitation. I am probably not able to tell you what you need to do step by step but can share my experience and lessons I learned before so that you will not feel alone. And I am sure everything will be fine.

    Love,

    Dad

Each time I email my dad for guidance, without fail, he would offer me unlimited support. Unlike me, he is a man surrounded by Wisdom on his right and Discipline on his left. Tonight, it seems that my father sends his Wisdom and Discipline to aid me in solving my own difficult situation.

Here I recommence the secret conversation in my mind:

“I need your help,” I say.

“You are not lost, my girl. You are just a few feet off the path. I ensure you, that you will be able to find your way back to this path on your own command,” Wisdom replies.

“But Anxiety and Depression have crept onto my bed to spend the night. Do you know how to drive them away?” I ask.

“You will be fine because I will protect you. I am more patient than Anxiety and tougher than Depression. I will help you to be free of them and regain your confidence.” Discipline makes a promise to me.

Soon afterwards, I sense a presence talking to me. Its sing-song angelic voice seems to be more compassionate and affectionate compared to that treacherous sound of the demon. I reach for that notebook and open it up unconsciously.

    Dear,

I am always with you. Don’t be afraid when the night falls again. I am right here and will love you unconditionally.

Go back to bed, my girl.

    Yours truly,

    Inner angel

Tonight, I fall asleep with the notebook next to me. It is the best sleep in three months.

In the morning, when I wake up, I can still sense the hostility of Anxiety and Depression, but they are nowhere to be seen. It is the first time that they have fled instead of me.
