Universities thrive in Shenzhen
    2017-03-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

To follow the national strategy of “building more world-class universities and first-class fields of discipline” proposed by Premier Li Keqiang in the 2017 Report on the Work of the Government, Shenzhen is making concrete efforts to build more universities and currently there are dozens of top universities from home and abroad that have opened or will open new campuses in Shenzhen.

As a matter of fact, with the exceptions of Futian and Yantian districts which have limited space, the other eight districts and new areas are competing to open new universities. Among them, Nanshan and Longgang districts stand out with two university towns in each district.

As the birthplace of Shenzhen’s endeavor to build universities, Nanshan District boasts the largest number of universities in Shenzhen. Since Shenzhen University, the oldest university in Shenzhen, was established, Nanshan District has witnessed an array of well-known universities introduced which include the graduate schools of Peking University, Tsinghua Univeristy and Harbin Institute of Technology, South University of Science and Technology as well as Peking University (Shenzhen) and Tsinghua University (Shenzhen). According to Wang Qiang, chief of Nanshan District, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will open a campus in Nanshan.

Longgang District, a strong competitor of Nanshan, has also seen a cluster of famous universities open campuses in the district, such as The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University. Different from Nanshan District, Longgang is positioned as an international university town in which Shenzhen Jilin Univeristy and The University of Queensland and Innovation College of South China University of Technology and Rutgers University are located.
