    1. Death toll reaches 50 in Ethiopia landslide

Officials said on Monday the death toll reached 50 from the collapse of a mountain of trash at a massive garbage dump on the outskirts* of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Rescue and recovery efforts continued on Monday at the Koshe landfill as relatives clutching photos waited for news of the dozens said to be missing.

Addis Ababa city spokeswoman Dagmawit Moges said most of the dead were women and children, and more bodies were expected to be found. It was not clear what caused Saturday night’s collapse at the Koshe Garbage Landfill.

    2. Haiti bus plows into parade

At least 38 people were killed and about a dozen injured in northern Haiti on Saturday after a bus drove into a parade of pedestrians* while fleeing from an accident, civil protection authorities said on Sunday.

The bus, which was traveling from Cap Haitien to the capital Port-au-Prince, initially hit two people in a town outside Gonaives in northern Haiti, killing one, said Joseph Faustin, civil protection head in the Artibonite department.

    3. Dutch expel Turkish minister

Dutch police used water cannons* and horses early on Sunday to break up protests outside the Turkish Consulate in Rotterdam as the city expelled a Turkish minister, amid an escalating diplomatic row with Ankara.

After several hours of calm demonstrations, police moved in to disperse over 1,000 people gathered close to the consulate, charging the crowd on horseback and using dogs to regain control.

Protesters hit back, throwing rocks at riot police, while hundreds of cars jammed* the streets blaring* their horns and revving* their engines.

    4. Park leaves office for private home

Former South Ko-rean President Park Geun-hye on Sunday left the presidential Blue House for her private home in southern Seoul two days after the constitutional court upheld her impeachment*.

Park apologized for the unfinished presidential term through her spokesman. Former presidential spokesman Min Kyung-wook read Park’s short statement, saying Park made her apology for the unfinished five-year term of her presidency.

Park expressed her thanks to people supporting her, saying she will take responsibility for all results.

    5. Fillon hit by fresh scandals

Beleaguered* French presidential candidate Francois Fillon was put on the defensive again over the weekend following two fresh controversies.

Fillon’s party apologized on Saturday for tweeting a caricature* of rival Emmanuel Macron that Fillon admitted was anti-Semitic*.

And on Sunday it emerged that he had accepted two suits from a friend worth 13,000 euros (US$13,900). France sets a limit of 4,600 euros that any individual can donate to a candidate.

    6. Guatemala in mourning after blaze

Guatemala declared three days of mourning after a blaze in a government-run children’s shelter on March 8 killed at least 22 teenage girls and focused attention on allegations* of sexual and other abuse in the facility.

All those killed were aged between 14 and 17. Most died of burns in the fire in the Virgin of the Assumption Safe Home in San Jose Pinula, 10 kilometers east of Guatemala City, officials said.

A total of 38 other people were injured, and 16 of them are in critical condition, hospital officials said.
