Watches custom-made out of your pet’s hair
    2017-03-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IF you think you and Fido are inseparable now, wait until you see the new product being offered by Analog Watches. The Philadelphia-based in-dependent design studio, which prides itself on drawing inspiration from nature, has launched the Companion Collection, a new line of wristwatches custom-made using fur or hair harvested from your pet.

“We took inspiration from the animal kingdom by developing a custom-to-order timepiece that will immortalize your favorite furry friend,” the brand announces on its website, where images of sample watches bearing bands lined with matted pet hair are displayed.

The company will make a timepiece out of fur harvested from many types of cuddly creatures — including dogs, cats, bunnies, and even hamsters.

Each watch has Japanese quartz movement and comes with a genuine leather-backed strap and a stainless steel watch shell — both of which are coated with your pet’s hair via Analog Watches’s signature handcrafted process, which transforms the hair into felted wool (hence the matted texture). “With our specialized hydrophobic coating, your new timepiece will remain soft, yet stay clean and water-resistant,” the site boasts.

Each watch also comes with its own case and a two-year warranty.

Analog Watches asks you to harvest 2 to 4 ounces of your pet’s fur, place it in an airtight bag, and ship it to them using the self-addressed, prepaid shipping label the company emails you when you place your order. You’re invited to choose your hardware finish at checkout. The finished product will take three to four weeks to complete.

The company’s process — which appears to use a sushi mat to roll out and flatten the pet hair before it’s incorporated into the watch design — is available for viewing on the company’s website.

The company will start taking orders in April and the watches will retail for a whopping US$200 apiece.

Though the watches are quite unique, clothing and accessories made from pet hair are not a new phenomenon. The site Rover shows examples of coats, vests, scarves, hats, sweaters, baskets, mittens, slippers, toys, and even a necktie comprised of fur from beloved dogs and cats. Rest assured, no animals are harmed in the making of these watches.
