SIX expats living in Shenzhen became the latest group of attendees to Shenzhen Daily’s “Join Us for Fun” program Sunday when they tried out racing simulators, outdoor rock-climbing, baseball and kendo at G CROSS, a multi-sport complex that focuses on promoting sports and outdoor lifestyles in Nanshan District.

Participants said they liked the racing simulators as it gave them the authentic thrill of car racing. Rock-climbing, which can be quite strenuous especially on the hands, was challenging for most of the participants. But one young man said he would definitely try it again. The kendo class, a new experience for many of the participants, left everyone sore after they practiced over 500 hits and other moves.

The next event of the “Join Us for Fun” series will be held at the COTALK Language Center, Reith Center, in Nanshan District on Saturday, May 20. To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, participants will have the chance to try on ancient Chinese costumes, make zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), recite the “Songs of Chu” and experience a traditional Chinese tea ceremony.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, commemorates the death of patriotic poet Qu Yuan (c.340-278 B.C.) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period (475-221 B.C.).

Those interested can follow WeChat accounts “EyeShenzhen” (WeChat ID: eyeshenzhen) or “Shenzhen Daily” (WeChat ID: iloveshenzhen) to apply. Applications close Wednesday.
