Belt and Road forum

President Xi Jinping announced on Monday that China will host the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in 2019.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with reporters at the end of a two-day Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, which was attended by leaders from 29 countries as well as the heads of the United Nations, International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Xi told the journalists that the forum was fruitful. A total of 68 countries and international organizations have signed Belt and Road cooperation agreements with China and a list of more than 270 outcomes was formulated.

Ransomware attack

China’s cyberspace authority on Monday warned computer users to install and upgrade security software to avoid being hit by the global WannaCry cyberattack, which has hit at least 100,000 organizations in 150 countries.

A statement issued by the cybersecurity coordination bureau of the Cyberspace Administration of China said the ransomware attack, which began to spread worldwide on Friday, has affected some computers in universities, passport application centers, gas stations, and other industrial and government agencies in China.

Harassment on campus

More than 7 percent of university students surveyed said that they have experienced harassment* from unidentified people on their college campuses.

The survey, which polled 601 students from over 100 Chinese universities, revealed that 7.58 percent of the respondents had experienced harassment, according to an article in Monday’s edition of China Youth Daily.

Xinjiang earthquake

Eight people have been confirmed dead and 23 others were injured after a 5.5-magnitude* earthquake jolted* Taxkorgan County in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 5:58 a.m. on Thursday.

So far, the quake has left more than 12,000 people affected. A total of 9,200 people have been relocated to safe places. The injured people have been sent to hospitals for treatment.
