1. London terror attack kills 7

British Prime Minister Theresa May declared “enough is enough” and pledged to defeat the “evil ideology* of Islamist* extremism” on Sunday in the wake of a horrific vehicle and knife attack by three men in central London that killed seven people and injured dozens.

The men drove a white van across London Bridge, plowing into pedestrians* before exiting the vehicle and attacking civilians at random with knives in Borough Market, a popular nightlife spot. Police shot dead all three attackers, who were wearing fake suicide vests, eight minutes after receiving the first emergency calls, they said.

2. Temer adviser arrested in probe

A close adviser to Brazil’s President Michel Temer was arrested in Brasilia on Saturday, police said, in the latest move in a corruption case that threatens to bring down his government.

Police filmed the aide, Rodrigo Rocha Loures, in March running from a Sao Paulo pizza restaurant parking lot to a taxi with a black suitcase containing 500,000 reais*, about US$152,500.

The judge who ordered Loures’ incarceration* is leading the Supreme Court’s investigation into a sprawling pay-for-play corruption case at state oil giant Petrobras that already has swept up many in Brazil’s political and business elite.

3. Philippine attacker a gambling addict

An armed man who killed 37 people when he set fire to a casino in the Philippine capital was a father of three from Manila motivated by heavy gambling debts and not terrorism, police said on Sunday.

The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines confirmed on Saturday that five Chinese nationals were among those dead in the attack.

4. Court denies arrest request

A South Korean court on Saturday denied a prosecutors’ request for an arrest warrant for Chung Yoo-ra, the daughter of a key figure in a corruption scandal that led to ouster* and arrest of ex-president Park Geun-hye.

Chung, 20, fled to Europe last year to avoid being prosecuted by South Korean authorities for her involvement linked to alleged crimes of her mother, Choi Soon-sil, a long-time confidante who is accused of colluding with Park to collect bribes from the country’s top businesses.

Choi and Park are currently being held at detention centers undergoing trials for extortion and abuse of power to extort millions of dollars from big companies and pressure them to donate to foundations controlled by Choi.

5. Slovak diplomat elected UNGA president

Slovak diplomat Miroslav Lajcak was elected on May 31 as president of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

As the only candidate nominated for the position, Lajcak was elected by acclamation* by the 193-member Assembly.

Lajcak is currently the minister of foreign and European affairs of Slovakia. Lajcak ran for the position of UN Secretary-General in 2016.

6. Kenya launches Standard Gauge Railway

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 30 launched the passenger train service of the 480-km Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Kenyatta said the railway marks a new chapter in the history of Kenya.

The modern railway will replace the meter gauge railway that was constructed more than 100 years ago during the British colonial rule, Kenyatta said. The launch came one day after the Kenyan leader launched the first SGR cargo service between the two cities.(SD-Agencies)
