“THE Mummy,” the first movie in Universal’s new Dark Universe, hits theaters this weekend and the studio is already expanding its original slate of monster movies with two suitably retro additions. “The Mummy” director/producer Alex Kurtzman listed the upcoming Dark Universe movies, and there are a couple of surprise additions from the slate as originally announced. “We know we’re going to do ‘Frankenstein,’ ‘Bride of Frankenstein,’ ‘Dracula,’ ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon,’ ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and ‘Invisible Man’,” explained Kurtzman, naming “Phantom of the Opera” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” as future projects in the line for the first time. But that’s not all he gave away; he also teased additional spinoffs featuring unnamed supporting characters from those stories. “There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off,” said Kurtzman, adding, “I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.”(SD-Agencies) |
