Universities hold independent exams to select students

Just one week after the National College Entrance Exam (NCEE or gaokao) finished on June 8, two universities in Shenzhen, namely Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) (Shenzhen) and Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), organized independent exams on June 15 to enroll students for the coming fall semester.

Apart from these two universities, a new jointly-built university, Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, also adopted the “631 Model” to select new students. The model assesses students on their gaokao results (60%), independent exam results (30%) and high-school performance (10%).

Through initial qualification reviews, nearly 1,600 students from Guangdong Province participated in the independent exams at CUHK (SZ), competing for only 165 slots to study at the university. The university will also enroll 35 Guangdong students based solely on their gaokao results.

Compared with previous years, this year’s independent exam at CUHK (SZ) featured a few changes. The Chinese interview section was canceled while the group discussion in English was kept.

In the writing portion, besides two writing tasks, one in Chinese and the other in English, the university added another two tasks where students needed to express their personal opinions in English.

Some exam-takers recalled that the CUHK (SZ)’s independent exam was difficult and innovative. For instance, the Chinese writing tasks were to “describe a strange person that you know well” and “explain road rage from cultural and technological perspectives.”

Though the exam was challenging for some students, all of the content was within the high school syllabus. Students simply were required to demonstrate independent thinking in their daily lives.

Various independent exams were held at different exam sites across the nation on the same day for students from different provinces.

Since the university mainly features science majors, a large portion of the exam assessed students’ knowledge in physics, math and English.

Many students said that the difficulty of SUSTech’s independent exam this year was similar to that of the gaokao, but the bonus questions were interesting and assessed students’ knowledge beyond what they had learned in their high school classes.

SUSTech plans to enroll 1,000 students out of more than 28,000 candidates from all across China. The university will take in 154 students from Guangdong Province alone.
